Last night my hubby and I went to Jazz & Blues Festival ..

to see... ..Celine Dion....

We were so fortunate to get so close to the stage...
The show was AMAZING!!

Here we were....25/30ft from an artiste
with an incredible voice, a lady,
someone who's so natural and filled with inner beauty.

Celine Dion was awesome!

I took these photos with my phone ( technology today!)

I so wanted to enjoy the moment,
live in the present and enjoy

Celine Dion's true gift.....hence..no more photos!

There is no better place to be for Christmas

than being with our children and respective companions.

Last but not least, our grandson Jacob.

We ate, drank, laughed and played.

God is good....

I designed this quilt for Jacob using

Bunny Hill Design by Ann Sutton - 'Lily and Will'.

when I had finished 'quilting' the quilt,

I was so excited to give my daughter,

I neglected to take a photo....a no! no! in my book!

It is so important to sign and document your Quilts,

As we say in Jamaica "baby turn grannie's head fool".....no denial....

Living in Jamaica is not without its challenges...

I think I must be the only one...thus far...who has the latest Bernina.

(hopefully in time....my students who are doing amazingly....

will want Bernina quilting machines)

We have some original Bernina Sewing Machines... going very strong!!

Hence......

I take my machine to a lovely Quilt Store in Florida to be serviced.

Unfortunately, it needed a part..

due to the Christmas rush it has been 4 weeks!!!

Ever wondered why Quilters have several machines.....

I do have one more..but...hint..hint..

The 'attachment' trap...Oh yes...that's me...

I get attached to my machine,

to my fabrics, to my notions, to my quilts......

I await patiently for my call ...to jump on the flight.....

In the meantime...

My stash is being reorganized....

The Summer of 2011 is soon to pass and we have spent a glorious time at our Beach Cottage.

We have enjoyed our peace and tranquility....

I have enjoyed reading my Magazines....cover to cover!!

Dreaming of my 'Gammill'...Smile....one day!

Our first grandchild is due tomorrow....

as we await his arrival with great excitement

I have been busy....

With the inspiration of Lily and Will's - Fabric Collection by Bunny Hill design for Moda

and my love for Beatrix Potter - Peter Rabbit - I made a few Quilts and a

Diaper Cake for her Baby Shower!...We had such fun...

HOWEVER....

As the summer ends I look at the sand... at the numerous footprints that remains only for a time.

I think of the 'pittar patter' of little feet

I think of how life is woven together

like fabrics...like Quilts.

a small village outside of Waterloo with quaint little shops.

The main street..maybe 1KM

The summers are full of activities. Farmer's Markets, lots of craft activities

and of course Quilt Show!

My favourites...The Quilt Shops..yes...Quilt shops!

The Mennonites trekked from Pennsylvania in the 1700"s in their wagons,

settling in and around St. Jacobs. Hence,

their Quilts, their beautiful handwork can be found in this small village.

My hubby and I have just returned from a lovely vacation, driving through the

rolling country sides of England, Wales and Ireland.
I had great plans to hop into a couple Quilt Shops in Ireland.
It was not to be....however, the talents of the Irish was much enjoyed.
When I visit a country I love browsing through the craft stores,

The craftmanship tells me so much about the people, the culture, the talents!

Today, March 19th, is NATIONAL QUILTING DAY....

My project for the day...CARIBBEAN QUILTERS, KINGSTON, JAMAICA

In the quilting world we meet other quilters from all over the globe. There is such an amazing bond between us all and a genuine feeling of 'caring'. We have come together in so many ways and through different means to help one another. 'A block' is all it takes...a simple 'Block' that speaks volumes from the Heart.

I have been reading my favourite 'Quilting Blogs' and am so thrilled to read
the different ways Quilters tidy their Studio after each project.

Before a new project, I have to be organised. Here's the problem...
I stroke my fabrics...Ohhh.... I had forgotten this FQ....
Oh My...These Jelly Rolls are so beautiful.....
As for these Layer Cakes.....they would be perfect for 'that pattern' I saw last week...
hmmm... now which Magazine???...with a cup of Blue Mountain coffee....in my chair

A Brief History of Hawaiian Quilting........

It was in the 1800’s when missionary women brought bolts of fabrics and steel needles from their sea voyage. They taught the Hawaiian people how to make patchwork quilts. The Hawaiians, did not see the point in taking these bolts of fabrics, cutting them into small pieces and sewing them together again! How senseless they thought!

The children were taught how to cut snowflake patterns from folded paper. The Hawaiians found this method of folding a more efficient way to create the designs which they were already printing on their bark cloth Kapas.

The story goes...One day while having one of their "sewing bees" in the shade of the Breadfruit tree, the shadow cast by the tree inspired the Hawaiians to create the first "Hawaiian Quilt" by cutting out the design seen in the shadow, from one large piece of fabric. The pattern was then appliqued onto another piece of fabric creating the quilt top. The beautiful gardens of the island were the inspirations for their many patterns. The ‘echo’ hand quilting around the various patterns epics the ripples of the Sea.

Where has the first month of the year gone!

I am in the process of preparing a 'Beginners'

quilting class for a few ladies who would like

to join 'The Wonderful World Of Quilting'

I am so delighted.....

Jamaicans are so creative....a small island we are, rich with talents!

Earlier this month we stayed at a Hotel on our beautiful country side.

In the lobby were two benches with these beautiful embroidered cushions,

made by a 'local' lady.

Our long tail Humming Bird, Our National Bird, is noted in a lot of our craft work.

Hence, I could not resist designing and making a Quilt with our Humming Bird.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

A new day has adjourn – it’s the beginning of a New Year –
As we leave 2010 let us take the positive forward leaving the negative to fade into the past

– it’s now history!

As we move forward many of us are thinking about our goals for 2011.

Over the years, I have written my goals on paper, imprinted them visually in my mind,

putting the paper in a ‘safe place’.

I marvel at the achievements at the end of each year.

Today, I shall embark on a new journey –

the creation of a ‘Vision Board’

What is a Vision Board?

A Vision Board is a poster or cork board on which you paste images that you have torn out of magazines, or created yourself. The idea is to surround yourself with images of who you want to become, what you want to achieve physically, mentally and spiritually for yourself, places you want to go and the quality of life you so desire. Most importantly, what you wish to attract into your life.

As I say goodbye to 2010, I look at my ‘Quilt House’,
the windows that have been closed for the season,
I look forward to opening them with great Joy.

Christmas Time

The Christmas season is here!

People rushing about, buying gifts for family, friends and loved ones!

Homes are being filled with treasured collections of Christmas decorations - or - out to the store

for something 'new' this year!

I collect Santas. As a child, I looked forward to Santa. I laid in bed fighting sleep, hoping for a glimpse of this amazing man with such a big heart..... I marvelled at his ability to visit all the children in the world!

I left a bottle of 'Red Stripe Beer' and cookies with a Thank You note.

A tradition passed on to my children.

Each morning we wake to the smell of our Christmas tree,

full of memories...each ornament telling its story.

We give thanks...how blessed we are!

I have finished several Quilt tops...and..
I just love machine Quilting.
I have fun quilting one quilt,
I get in the rhythm
I finish... then have to wait to do another quilt.
As I am in the groove...
I wish to quilt ' in that moment'!

Hence....
I have decided, to make a few tops,
prepare them for quilting and off I go...all set!
Well... I have accepted that one can not enjoy
ALL aspects of Quilting..
putting the quilts together
I find so tedious.

On the positive side,
it's a challenge to see how I can rectify this situation
This is a very important part of the whole process.
I shall continue my research....
I do welcome any suggestions....

My Blue Mountain Coffee

I love coffee, I am very fortunate.....

The finest coffee in the world comes from my homeland. (Smile)

Whenever I travel I take coffee as a gift, however, persons do not realize,

like everything there is a 'shelf life'.

When the coffee beans are stored in the refrigerator waiting for a special moment,

you loose the fresh essence of the freshly roasted beans.

This of course IS my opinion based on my experiences.

For me these days.....Fresh is the Best! Indulge in the 'here and now',......there is no better time.

It is so good to let go and create....no pattern....I am learning a lot and have many questions to ask or reading of magazines and blogs to do.

Selecting the right colour binding I find to be very important.

My husband and I have been travelling....now..when you are a quilter, a quilt shop is the No.1 tourist attraction. Eagerly, I began my research on the various quilt shops en route..whoops.. I had to promise...this trip is a 'holiday'. Husbands always think we have a lot of fabrics! Finding that little piece of fabric to bring all the energy of a quilt together can be so difficult. It's just not there in my stash!

I was very good, however, in Paris my dear husband weakened. Excitedly, we tried on several occasions to visit 'Le Rouvray'. We were either too late..too early or the wrong day...I stood looking through the window, relishing in the moment, my hands moving slowly across the glass... I thanked my hubby.

All was not lost, our visits to the Bookstores allowed me to enjoy and purchase many quilting magazines...smile! In Jamaica, it's difficult to find a quilt magazine on the stand, hence, I do subscribe to a few. The Quilt Industry continues to grow at such a rapid rate its awe-inspiring. One of my favourite, is Quilters Newsletter....there have been a lot of changes...buy one and relax with a cup of coffee and Enjoy!

How I wish I could be there in the midst of all the latest Fabrics and technology in the fast growing world of Quilting. Instead, as I drive along the coast of our island I enjoy the simplicity of life.......

A Little Shop on the roadside...it's Sunday...they are closed.

I find inspiration from the colours of nature and reflect on the times when I am in search for that one piece of fabric that going to make my Quilt 'pop' -better known as the 'wow' fabric.

I look yonder...

I will be in my studio attempting a new technique of trapunto. It looks exciting and rather simple. I shall keep you posted, although I tend to go for the challenging elaborate task to begin my journey, I have decided to be somewhat timid and go simple.......and enjoy the simplicity of life.

There is something soothing about quilting by the seaside, the waves lapping on the sand bringing its own form, only for a moment, returning back to sea to revolve again. We are always revolving.

I am quilting away making lap size quilts to throw on chairs in my Beach House. Yes, I know Quilts in a Beach House! Quilts adds such warmth to a home and today, the quilting fabrics are so amazing!

who is very dear to my heart. She loves Blue and White!
Christmas came and went and I had not finished her gift...it's never too late..
a gift from the heart that touches the soul of someone dear to
you is whats important. The month of April is fine! and so it was.........

It has been so long! On February 6th 2010 our daughter got married. We are so blessed as Madelaine and Craig are an amazing and beautiful couple.

Our ‘Holy Trinity Cathedral’ is so beautiful. The amazing work of art you now see was all painted grey in the early 1970’s! The journey of restoration has begun , although a long road, the unveiling of history in its true form touches the core of ones soul. There is something so mystical about history.

Over the past months I have been so enveloped with wedding plans my ‘quilting life’ was forced into the background. I have certainly experienced withdrawal symptoms. I have been spending quiet time in my studio, stroking my fabrics, turning the leaves of my magazines and Quilt books, enjoying each word and photo of inspiration.

The quilting world is moving at such an immense pace. Ideas are constantly evolving; Although feeling a little behind, a few more quiet days in my studio and I will be in my quilting zone!

Happy New Year and Happy Quilting for 2010.

On Tuesday December 22nd 2009 American Airline was most anxious for their passengers to be on the beach in Jamaica. Land on our beaches and all will survive. What a miracle! It's scary to think of what could have been. This beach is not our greatest, however, all passengers and crew on flight AA331 survivied. Amazing!

My nativity has been around for at least 65years. I remember as a child, the nativity was placed under the Christmas Tree. I used to sit and imagine myself beside the lamb looking on at Baby Jesus. I still wonder what it would have been like...perhaps I will sit by the donkey!

Thank you so much for your support throughout the year.

Block for Flood Quilt in Ireland
by 'Irish Quilting' magazine

Sew together a nine-patch, using 5" squares. Use repeat fabric for

squares 2,4,6,8 as these become the sashing squares. Press towards

the sashing. Block should measure 14" at this stage. Trim if necessary.

Cut through the sashing and centre squares evenly in both directions,

7" from outside edge

Re- arrange these smaller units as per diagram or play around

with your own layout.

Pieced together

Sew the four units into a complete block measuring 13 1/2 "

Thank you all so much for the wonderful response to the Block/Blocks
for the Flood Victims in Ireland. I will put some blocks together and
send the Quilt top along with blocks to The Irish Quilting Magazine.
They will put them together and distribute them to the
Flood Victims.

There is no colour theme, delve into your stash and
follow your vibe.

When I was at Houston Quilt Market I saw these beautiful batiks made
by Batik Textiles. They were bright and lively. My photography does not
do the fabrics any justice!

The Batik is designed by Batik Textiles and they designed a
quilt for the line of fabric and guess the name of the Quilt.....

It's a small world!

What I find interesting is the power of colour and what colour

means to us.

Speak of Usain Bolt(the fastest man in the world) and we think

of Green, Gold and Black the colour of the Jamaican Flag.

Speak of Jamaican music and we think of Red, Green and Gold

Where has time gone! I reckon another 5-6 hours would be great. Can you imagine - so much quilting to do and blogs to write. I am indeed blessed, for some people, the days are very long!

Ireland has just experienced the worst flood in 800years! The Irish Quilting magazine has embarked on a journey to make quilts for all those families who have lost their homes.

The Block for Flood Quilt is simple and will mean so much to those who are homeless

today.

First comes Love, than comes marriage, then comes Tracy
pushing the carriage. Well, thats what happened to Tracy Blake
a Canadian who fell in love with Jamaica!

Tracy has made numerous quilts to raise funds for a basic school in rural Portland, Jamaica.

What an amazing experience! I went to my first Quilt Market in Houston and had an amazing time. Needless to say is was extremely overwhelming for me....

The crowd for Sample Spree was unbelievable. Sample Spree, is all about getting samples of the new fabrics that will be out in a few months. Next time, I will definitely be better prepared!

This is Heather Bailey's Booth.

Heather and her husband are wonderful people. Her husband, Issac,

is a wedding photographer and had an assignment in Jamaica.

They both had an amazing visit to the island, the bond was wonderful.

I love Heather's fabrics and will be ordering her new line

"Pop Garden & Bijoux" to be out in July.

I am off for the weekend to relax at our cottage by the seaside to

read my new magazines, to return on Tuesday to open my studio -

It has been so long! Every now and then you encounter someone who

puts so much energy into a charitable organization, especially for

children. It touches my heart as the children in need yearns for 'Love.'

Giving of the heart brings a wonderful sense of Peace.

I have been working on a quilt which is going to take a few months,
perhaps a year! Lots of small pieces and I am using a lot of Black, which
I find to be stressful on the eyes. I would welcome any advice on lighting
for a Studio.

I am off to Houston and I am so excited!

I am so far behind in my reading. I love quilting magazines and

read them cover to cover. Quilting continues to evolve at such a

pace to an amazing place. My heart begins to palpitate when I

realize life is far too short to explore fully the grand journey of the

Quilting World.

I walk my own journey and will sit on my beach this weekend

enjoying the tranquil of the Caribbean sea enjoying the articles of

McCall's Quilting, Irish Quilting and Machine Quilting Unlimited.

I have enjoyed reading all 4 Issues of the 'Irish Quilting ' magazines.

The premier Issue I found particularly good. The photos are amazing
and the articles are informative.

I decided to make the quilt ' Mind the Garden' using my
Morris Garden Fabrics. A fabric line I love.

Stitching the binding on a quilt is a relaxing time.

Your creation is complete. I will now write in my Quilt Journal

the lessons I have learnt and the joy while making the quilt.

I love machine quilting. The quilting design is so important, for me, it determines the mood of the quilt. As I am working on a challenging project, I find a break of 'free form' to be so relaxing and energizing. The fabric used is 'The Morris Garden' by Barbara Brackman - Moda. Do you find there are some fabrics in your stash that you are reluctant to use as they are so beautiful?
I do....

We are half way through the year, before long Christmas will be here. Its time to start on the Christmas Quilt!

We all tend to create a little box of comfort within ourselves. I love Christmas, its my favourite time of year. I decided to step outside my box with these beautiful Indonesian fabrics from Moda. The challenge...how does one put these fabrics together! Its going to be fun.

It has been a long time since I have written on my blog. Lots to share.

Whenever I travel there has to be a quilt day. Bless my hubby!

We visited Shelburne Museum in Vermont to view
"Piecing Together the Past": Quilts" - a beautiful display of quilts by
Florence Peto (1880-1970). I found her work so soft with an elegance
and charm. I tried to imagine myself quilting in my 80's. What joy!
This generation was so regal and it reflects in their quilts.

Florence Peto did a lot of floral applique using elaborate broderie-perse work.

When my 'Jelly Cakes' arrived, I felt compelled to experiment with these precut pieces.
Jelly Cakes are 1 Layer cakes (40 - 10"square) and 1 Jelly Roll(40- 2.5" strips)

There is an element of softness when working on a baby quilt.
While making a baby quilt, I always marvel at one of the greatest miracles of all
-a perfect healthy baby!

I experimented with the 'Jelly Rolls' 2.5" strips and had fun with the border.
It worked well!

There is a charm about 'old enamelware'. I bought this painting today that hangs amongst my fabrics reflecting a warmth from the past. What's missing? A fireplace and more quilts.

While assembling my quilt top to be quilted my mind usually wonders. How difficult this must be had I not been attending Yoga Classes......the poses and stretches are wonderful!

Where Quilter's Create

April warms the hearts of 16 ex-soldiers
from ‘Curphey Home’ in Mandeville, Jamaica
last Christmas (2008). She made 16 ‘Bandana Quilts’
Finding space to do her machine quilting was quite simple!

Here is April, having removed a 'leaf' from her dinning table,
she placed her chair in the middle, and quilted away with joy in her heart.

Easter Weekend has passed. In Jamaica, Good Friday is the day
we indulge in our traditional 'Easter Bun and Cheese' all day! My
favourite Bun this year was 'Miss Birdie' .....it was delicious.

In the meantime, my Moda ‘Turnovers’ arrived.

What are Turnovers?

'Turnovers' are 6" squares cut diagonally giving you
40 different 6" triangles from a Moda Fabric Designers
Collection. I used Patisserie Turnovers.

I was so excited and enjoyed working with the pre-cut
triangles. I have now finished my quilt top and about to
put it all together.

Here is my quilt top.

This year my goal is to applique an amazing quilt or

at least begin the journey. I have not yet started, however,

my Applique quilt is on my vision board!

My friend Carlene, who teaches 'Applique' is in the

process of making her grandson a quilt. I have asked her

to share with us her blocks as she makes Jaimie's Quilt.

Here is her first block.

I just love this picture!

This Quilt was made for my niece from ‘Layer Cakes’.
I love the fabrics and had such fun putting them together.
The pattern was by Cozy Quilt Design, simple and relaxing.

What are ‘Layer Cakes’? ‘Layer Cakes’ are a fabric line
of 40 10” squares. It’s one of the many ingredients from
Moda Bake Shop.

I have just finished a top using ‘Layer Cakes’
and ‘Jelly Rolls’....there are also 'Honey Buns'
and 'Turnovers'...I find the names so cute!
Amazing idea!

With these sweet ingredients make a quilt
for a friend in need -
